The 41 year-old's world was shattered in 2015 at the loss of his beloved wife Rebecca and found himself left to raise their three children.
Reflecting on Rebecca's death, which followed a short battle with breast cancer, Rio said: "I thought I'm never going to be happy again.
"I'll never meet anyone, I was just really content with just being me and the kids and that's all I thought it was going to be."
The football legend made the comments on their upcoming documentary 'Rio and Kate: Becoming a Stepfamily'.
Of course, the star did find love again and took Kate down the aisle last year. The family are now adjusting to their new life with the former reality TV star.
Rio added: "She's uplifting, she's added value to this house given where it was. It was at a low ebb.
"You feel you've been dealt a terrible hand, but your luck can change."
While she does admit to "winging" family life, Kate said her main priority is the children's happiness.
She explained: "No one really knows what to say. I know I'm caring and I just go with that and hope it's right...
"I just want the children to be happy. It's hard for us so I can't imagine how hard it is for the kids."
