The couple welcomed son Bear in March 2017 and have since went their separate ways, despite both remaining a huge part of each other's lives.
The One Direction star has told of how he struggled at first, despite always wanting to be a young dad.
Liam told The Guardian: "I built it up so much in my head. Finding your feet in that relationship between child and father - it's difficult.
"Cheryl was always really glued to Bear, so for me, I was like, 'What's my role in this? If I cook and look after her, then in turn I'm looking after him' - that made sense to me."
The singer is often away from Bear for weeks at a time due to his work commitments, but is grateful technology can reunite them.
