The 86-year-old has been married to Percy Gibson, her fifth husband, for 17 years and insists that both husband and wife must help each other and communicate effectively in order to remain on the right path.
The star gave the following advice: "The key to a happy marriage is supporting each other. There will be highs and lows in any relationships, but make sure you are there for one another when you need it most.
"Communicate, communicate, communicate. I can't say it enough. You may not always agree on everything, but always make time to talk to each other every day."
Joan added that relationships must be built on more than passion, as this often dwindles away eventually.
"Fall in love, not lust," she said. "People can fall head of heels for one another, then wake up one day and wonder why they fell for them in the first place. There has to be more, to be something to fall back on."
