Leaders and MLAs from four of the region's five main political parties attended the reception at Stormont on Thursday 20 June. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) was the only one not in attendance.
Sinn Fein's leader in Northern Ireland, Michelle O'Neill, said there is "no room for second class citizenship".
Addressing her counterparts, she said: "It doesn’t matter who you are, you're elected to represent all people in society.
"The LGBT+ community is a valuable and integral part of our society and I'm determined to ensure that people are heard.
"I'm determined to ensure that you can enjoy the same rights, the same benefits that everybody else does. That's not a privilege, that's just your right."
Meanwhile, Ulster Unionist leader Robin Swann said any return to government should be followed by legislative action for the LGBT+ community.
Northern Ireland's Assembly and Executive has been suspended since January 2017.
Mr Swann commented: "If and when we restore devolution Stormont must offer a platform and bring representation and legislation for our LGBT+ community."
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood advocated for veto reform and said the petition of concern- a parliamentary power used by the DUP to block equal marriage- should not be allowed to exist.
