Study Shows Equal Marriage Laws Improve Mental Health Of Same-Sex Couples

A recent study has found that legalising equal marriage can improve the mental health of same-sex couples.

Conducted at the University of Illinois, the research examined the US Supreme Court ruling on the landmark 2015 case which legalised equality marriage in all 50 states, and its effect on people in same-sex relationships.

Professor Brian Ogolsky and his co-authors concluded that psychological distress dropped and life satisfaction increased after the decision.

The study's findings were held regardless of marital status- so married and unmarried individuals in same-sex relationships agreed.

The team based their study on data collected from subjects in the four months leading up to the 2015 ruling, compared to data from one year later.
