In a recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Miley wrote a personal essay detailing her LGBTQ+ identity and her recent marriage with Liam Hemsworth.
The 26-year-old singer and actress said: "We're redefining, to be f***ing frank, what it looks like for someone that's a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship."
When addressing how her pansexual identity fits into her new marriage, she explained: "What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I'm in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality...gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships."
Miley met Liam Hemsworth, 29, on the set on their film 'The Last Song' in 2009 as they co-starred alongside each other. They began dating soon after but over the course of their ten-year relationship they separated three times, including breaking off one previous engagement.
They finally married in December 2018 at Miley's home in Tennessee in a private ceremony. In her Vanity Fair interview, she defined her marriage as being "new-age" and far from "old-fashioned".
She spoke about coming out to the Independent in 2016, and said: "I didn't understand my own gender and my own sexuality."
"I always hated the word 'bisexual' because that's even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl."
Miley has continued to be an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights since, starting a charity called 'The Happy Hippie Foundation' in late 2014. This is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping homeless and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) youth.
