England Cricket Captain Champions Gay Rights

England Cricket Captain Joe Root has been widely praised for telling an opponent not to use the word 'gay' as an insult.

The Yorkshire player was heard through an on-pitch microphone telling West Indies opponent Shannon Gabriel: "There's nothing wrong with being gay."

It is unclear what Gabriel had initially said, but Root added: "Don't use it as an insult".

The teams were playing in Saint Lucia, where anyone found guilty of being in a homosexual relationship can face up to 10 years in prison.
