One quarter of respondents said their local authority offered no training on the LGBT+ community and how best to address such matters in the classroom.
According to TES Scotland, one teacher said in the research: "There is a real lack of awareness that results in teachers not being able to challenge and deal with LGBT discrimination, and when pupils often report it goes unchallenged."
The survey comes after it was reported late last year that Scotland will become the first country in the world to teach sexuality issues in school lessons.
