A government paper recommended adding the new sections to allow the Office of National Statistics (ONS) to gather accurate data about the LGBT+ community.
The document notes a "clear and significant requirement for better information on sexual orientation".
The introduction would support work in policy development and service provision for the community, and the ONS has recommended the question be voluntary and offered to everyone over the age of 16.
The body conducted independent research to survey public opinion on including sexual orientation questions.
Of the 15,595 households, there was a 25% response rate with only 1% of people claiming they wouldn't complete the form if the changes were implemented. 70% of respondents over 16 thought it was acceptable to survey sexual orientation, and a further 80% said they would answer accurately.
