The higher chances were seen for both oestrogen receptor (ER) positive and ER negative breast cancer. Breastfeeding did not affect the risk patterns.

According to the researchers, the findings show that the likelihood of developing breast cancer can differ between older and younger women, and should be considered in combination with other characteristics, such as family history of the disease.

The study was co-authorised by the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Institute of Cancer Research in London and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina.
