The observational study used data from extremely preterm births, which applies to any child born earlier than 28 weeks.
It found that 82% (751) of premature babies were offered intensive care treatment, and 546 of those survived to age eight (73%).
Of the survivors, 17% had a major disability.
As the days go on following premature births, the probability of death decreases and chances of survival without a major disability increase.
When a baby is born with little gestational age, the probabilities of survival and major disabilities vary.
