Bereaved Father Said Stillbirth Is 'Death By Another Name'

A father who lost his second daughter when she was stillborn in 2014 has given a moving account of his family's ordeal and said it is "an experience that changes your life".

David Monteith's daughter Grace died before she was born in May 2014, leaving him and his wife Siobhan devastated.

He recently gave an emotional account of their still birth experience at the annual conference of the Royal College of Midwives.

"I will not give it another name," he said.

"My daughter died. Stillbirth is death by another name."

David took delegates at the conference through his emotional journey, from fingerprint mementoes to the midwives who helped him and Siobhan.

He said: "You are the gatekeepers to our grief journey and you can mitigate that transition in so many little ways, but you need to tell us what's out there, what we need to know."

David and his wife Siobhan founded Grace in Action, an organisation that supports bereaved families and shares information with birth professionals all over the UK and internationally.

They both feel passionate about educating people about stillbirth.

David said: "It's an experience that changes your life, it gives birth to a whole new universe.

"Pain, anger, paranoia in your next pregnancy. It fractures relationships with friends, families, partners.

"It rocks up in every other issue you have and bundles it all in with your grief," he added.
