The 38-year-old made the revelation in his upcoming autobiography which he has shared with The Sun newspaper. The former footballer admitted that he had always been distant when it came to emotion, but he now treasures brief moments of happiness with his children more than he did before he lost his wife.
He wrote: "I've had to be taught this stuff – but I'm learning. Slowly but surely, I'm learning. The heartbreaking truth is that losing Rebecca has made me more loving. I can't turn back the clock and show her more love, but I can try not to repeat the same mistakes with our children."
He continued: "Being able to cry makes me feel more alive, and for that I am profoundly grateful."
Rio and Rebecca married in 2009 and had three children together; Lorenz, 11, Tate, 9, and six-year-old Tia. Rebecca was first diagnosed with cancer in 2014 and appeared to be free from the disease following treatment. In early 2015, it was revealed that the cancer had returned. She died just five weeks later, in May.
