The survey, which has been carried out by Groupon, found that a number of parents are cutting back on the amount of money they spend as they prepare to keep their children entertained over the summer months.
In fact, some 39% of parents limit their spending for the month of June so that they can increase their budgets in July and August. On average, parents set aside around £220 in June in preparation.
While almost one in 10 said they start planning and saving for the summer break six months in advance.
Spending does not always go to plan, however, as 35% of parents admit that they often have to make cutbacks at the end of the summer due to going over budget.
The research revealed that parents estimate they spend £251 on activities that will keep their offspring occupied while they are off school during the summer. In addition, they spend £138 more than the usual household outgoings during term time, bringing total extra spending over the summer break to an estimated £389 per family.
Almost two-thirds of parents said they do try and plan activities for their children ahead of the break, but by the end of August, some 45% are struggling for new ideas.
Julie Szudarek, International President of Groupon, which has created a 'summer sorted' calendar to help give families ideas for summer activities, said: "Parents are bombarded on a daily basis by images of perfect family scenes, relaxing holidays and calm reading sessions, but we know the reality is usually far more chaotic."
