The research, which has been conducted by Auto Europe, found that almost a quarter of women purposefully hide money from their other half. Only women were polled for the research, with a typical female having £2,768 in cash – or a secret account.
The reasons for doing so vary, with 31% of women saving money for an exotic holiday. However, 23% are doing so incase they decide to end their relationship.
A further 12% also have at least one account set up in their maiden name in order to keep things hidden.
Interestingly, the survey also discovered that 13% of women have gone as far as to enlist the help of their parents to hide money, while almost one in 20 give lump sums to their best friend to keep for them.
Nearly one in 10 confessed to having opened an offshore account for their savings.
When it comes to feelings about the secret money, 26% of respondents said that they did feel guilty about keeping it quiet from their partner, but 16% said that it didn't hurt to have some money saved.
More than a quarter agreed that it was important, whether in a relationship or not, to remain financially independent. However, 42% said they would be angry if their other half had savings that they did not know about.
A spokesperson for Auto Europe is quoted as saying: "It is wise to have some savings set aside, but personal preference whether you want to share your finances with your other half or not.
"However, it could seem one sided if one partner is openly sharing knowledge about their savings and investments and the other is slyly squirrelling away their money."
