Denise Mitchell, Sinn Féin Dublin Bay North TD, described the passing of a party motion ensuring that the new National Maternity Hospital will be built and remain entirely within public ownership as "a victory for women's health."
Deputy Mitchell said: "The vote in the Dáil was a tremendous victory for women's health. The Health Minister and the Government must now accept that decision and ensure that the new National Maternity Hospital to be built on the St Vincent's Hospital campus is entirely independent of any non-medical influence.
"Citizens were rightly angry that a €300 million taxpayer-funded facility would be handed over to a religious organisation. This vote reaffirms the view of the majority of people that this new hospital must be publicly-owned.
"During the debate I also made it very clear to the Minister that all procedures and treatments provided by the hospital should be dictated solely by medical need and there should be no non-medical interference in these decisions."
She continued: "The passing of this motion puts the onus on the Government to do the right thing for the women of Ireland. The National Maternity Strategy must be implemented in full and the Sinn Féin team in Leinster House will be keeping the pressure on the Minister to follow through on these commitments."
