The research, conducted by sunshine.co.uk, asked more than 2,160 people – all of whom have been abroad for a holiday in the last 12 months – about how they kept in touch with those back home when they are travelling.
Respondents were first asked who, or what, they missed the most during their holiday. Pets topped the vote with 21%, and was followed by 'my bed' (16%) and friends (15%). Family members came next with 11% of the vote, just ahead of 'my partner' (10%).
They were then asked if they had called or messaged back home when they were away, with 87% admitting that they did keep tabs on what was happening back home. Just 13% were able to stay away from technology and fully immerse themselves in their break.
Of those who did contact home, video calling proved popular (65%). However, when it comes to the ones we want to speak to the most when away, pets (42%) lead the way, followed by friends (28%) and parents (22%).
Commenting on the findings, Rebecca Gill, sunshine.co.uk, said: "Holidays are amazing – the build-up, the excitement and then being there, it's usually always worth the money and the wait that we have to endure.
"That being said, it can be easy to miss home comforts, family members and pets, and even colleagues as all of these play such a big role in our day-to-day lives.
"With technology playing such a prominent role in our lives these days, and there being decent Wi-Fi in most places, we're more connected than ever.
"Although, it wouldn't hurt to ignore technology whilst away, fully immerse yourself in your holiday, and enjoy missing the things you love from back home – they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all."
