The couple were married for 10 years, but their relationship has been surrounded by controversy throughout.
On Monday, the Daily Mail announced that the former Spice Girls' singer had filed divorce papers at Los Angeles Superior Court. The 41-year-old cited "irreconcilable differences" as her reason for the separation.
She has also listed joint custody in the filing, requesting that she and Belafonte share responsibility of their five-year-old daughter Madison.
Mel B and Belfonte married in Las Vegas in 2007. In 2014, the couple were said to have been involved in violent rows, with Belafonte accused of physically attacking his wife. Belafonte denied all suggestions of domestic abuse and the couple appeared to work through the claims.
The couple have one child together, a daughter called Madison. Mel is also a mother two other children from previous relationships.
