A source told The Sun: "Hypo was the first guy Emeli had properly fallen for since leaving Adam.
"They got together after meeting through friends and had some amazing times. But long-term relationships are so hard to get right in the music industry."
Despite their split the pair have remained on good terms.
The source continued: "Towards the end of last year they both decided to call it a day and keep their friendship strictly professional.
"It's sad but the best way forward. Emeli's really happy and already eager to put herself back out there."
