More than 1,000 parents – of children aged between 10 and 15 – took part in the study as part of the company's 'Home' report, which looks at the impact of technology on family lives.
The findings revealed that the most common age at which children are given a mobile phone is 11, while 88% of children (nine out of 10), will have their own phone by the age of 15.
When compared to their parents' generation, those aged 35 – 44 received, on average, their first phone at the age of 20, while those aged 45 – 54 were around 29 years old.
As for the reasons to giving a child a mobile, 56% of parents said it was for safety reasons; for example, so that they can be contactable when away from home. Some 23% admitted they gave their child a phone because their friends were getting them, while 19% said they bought the device 'to keep them entertained'.
A further 7% confessed they gave their children phones so that they could play games.
Commenting on the figures, Lindsey Rix, MD, Personal Lines Aviva UK General Insurance, said: "It's clear to see just how device-savvy children are these days. In fact one in eight parents surveyed said they rely on their children to help them with technology."
