The couple, who married in Manchester, had a small ceremony in front of two witnesses, but said that their family and friends were okay about missing out on the wedding.
The 32-year-old was appearing on ITV's Loose Women when she discussed the couple's big day, explaining: "We live in Manchester and had to do it in the city centre and our name was up there for 28 days and nobody saw. Secret is not the word, more surprise.
"People have said, 'Weren't your friends really annoyed?', but I thought what kind of friends would they be? I hope not.
"I love a good wedding, I do, and I hope I'm invited to lots of them. I love a big wedding, but for myself, I wanted low-key. I didn't want to be the centre of attention."
She continued: "It felt really romantic. The night before, I said to Chris, 'I don't want to feel any different to how I have before.' I feel nicer, more complete."
The actress also said that she would not have wanted a magazine deal for her wedding, admitting: "For us, it just felt like our day and it weren't that interesting with just us there, so I don't think our wedding would be able to fill many pages of a magazine."
McAlpine shared an image earlier this month, revealing that she and Farr had married. The couple have one child together, a son Albert, who was born in November 2014.
