The bill from former justice minister David Ford seeks to legalise abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities. If the bill is passed, it would allow women who find themselves in such a situation to be able to access a legal termination in NI, rather than have to travel to mainland UK.
Currently, an abortion is only permitted in the region if a woman's life is at risk, or if there is a risk of permanent and serious damage to her mental or physical health. Unlike the rest of the UK, the 1967 Abortion Act does not extend to NI.
In February 2016, MLAs voted against legalising abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.
This passage follows a previous attempt by Mr Ford to change the law while justice minister. It is understood the next stage will take place in the new year.
