A new poll has revealed some of the questionable behaviour hotel guests get up to during a short break, holiday or business trip, including stealing, cheating on a partner, and engaging in illegal activity.
The survey, which was commissioned by sunshine.co.uk, asked 1,426 Britons, aged 18 and over, about their hotel confessions. Respondents were given a list of behaviours and then asked to reveal which they had carried out during a hotel stay.
Topping the list with 52%, was checking out later than the hotel's stated time, but this was closely followed by 41% of people who admitted they had more people in the room than were actually paid for.
Other questionable behaviour included stealing an item (39%), receiving an upgrade or freebies – by lying or threatening bad reviews – (33%), while 24% said they had engaged in illegal behaviour, such as drugs.
Others 'tricked' the minibar by drinking items and filling bottles with water (16%), while 11% confessed they used their hotel room to carry out an affair. A further 5% said they had sex in the lift, or other areas outside of the room.
Of those who admitted to having sex in a hotel lift or other areas of the hotel outside of their room, when asked if they had been caught in the act, 62% said they had.
Commenting on the findings, Sue Anderson, sunshine.co.uk, said: "There's that old saying that goes 'you treat this place like a hotel', which generally means having a huge lack of respect and behaving like a bit of a slob.
"Our study shows that, actually, bad behaviour in hotels can go way beyond a bit of mess and misbehaving. Stealing, drug taking and infidelity is what some Britons get up to behind closed doors of hotel room and we were truly shocked by the results of this poll."
