Katona made the revelation on Channel 5's In Therapy programme.
Speaking about helping her mother Sue she said: "I got all her medicines out and said, 'Go on, take them, you're selfish'.
"I made her take all the pills, then I rang for an ambulance and told her I'd pick her up after school."
Katona also revealed she had her children's names tattooed on her arm to stop her from slitting her wrists.
She said: "If it's hereditary I'd have to be one selfish person to cut through my kids' names, so that's why they're there.
"I'm so proud of how my kids have turned out and that's down to me."
Kerry has five children with three different fathers.
She recently got back together with her third husband George Kay.
