The findings, commissioned by jewellers Mappin & Webb, found that the average woman in Britain now expects an engagement ring to cost £1,013. She also expects to receive a proposal after 25 months of dating a partner.
Furthermore, her husband-to-be should propose at a landmark in her home city. However, the man no longer needs to worry about asking her parents for her hand in marriage, it seems.
In addition, women are now taking the initiative when it comes to that diamond ring, preferring to chose their own rather than have their other half buy a ring themselves before they pop the question.
Of the 2,000 women surveyed, a third admitted that they wanted to choose their own ring because they felt that their boyfriend would make the wrong choice. While the most popular type of ring is a solitaire cut diamond on a white gold band, one in 20 go for a ruby or emerald.
When it comes to the proposal itself, men can relax – a little. Less than one in five respondents said they had their perfect proposal planned out in their mind.
Interestingly, half of women said they don't mind where the proposal actually takes place, but the beach or a famous landmarks are safe choices for men.
Just one in five women also admitted that they had turned down a marriage proposal in the past.
Craig Bolton, from Mappin & Webb, is quoted as saying: "The results of our survey should give the men of the UK plenty of food for thought.
"The winter and Christmas period is a very popular time of year for proposals to take place, so if any men or women are thinking of popping the question now's the time to do it.
"A happy marriage starts with a happy proposal, and the ring is something that absolutely has to be perfect – whether it's a flawless stone or a bespoke ring with some personal meaning to the couple."
