The actor has been married to Camila Alves since 2010, but in a new interview, he has revealed that he thought she was going to turn him down when he popped the question.
Speaking in the November issue of Esquire magazine, the 46-year-old said: "I remember hitting the knee, looking into her eyes. I remember her face. I remember this smile coming up from her feet.
"I remember her having to catch her breath, and she didn't say yes right away. And then the whole family was going, '…she's gonna say no.'"
Camila did accept his proposal, but due to the actor's busy work schedule, it took the couple a further four months before they set a date for their wedding.
McConaughey and Camila, 34, met in 2006. They have three children together; Levi, eight, Vida, six, and three-year-old Livingston.
