The 22-year-old is said to have felt the romance was too "hot and heavy" for the short time they were together, but a source has since told E! Online that the couple's romance was not that series to begin with.
They are quoted as saying: "They were never officially together, but more casual hanging out and having fun. It was super hot and heavy, and because Justin doesn't want a relationship right now, he wanted to cool things down.
"It wasn't an intentional cool-off. It just sort of happened on its own."
Bieber and 18-year-old Richie, who is the daughter of singer Lionel Richie, were said to have been dating earlier this year after they shared a number of images of themselves together to social media.
However, their relationship made headlines whenever Bieber hit out at his fans, asking them to "stop the hate" after a number of them criticised his romance with Richie.
He was then criticised by his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez to hold him that instead of hitting out at his fans, that he should keep his private life out of the spotlight. This led to an argument between the former couple on social media.
