According to local newspaper Heraldo, the couple – named as Agustin Aliaga and his wife Juani Sanchez – lost the piece of jewellery in 1979, while swimming near the resort of Benidorm. The incident happened just five months after their wedding.
Last month, a diver found the ring and shared a photo of it, in the hope of giving it back to its owners.
Jessica Nisos wrote alongside the image: "I found a wedding ring diving off the island of Benidorm. I wish I could give it back to the owner. It has been lost for a long, long time because it was covered in sediment.
"It is from a couple who got married on 17-02-1979. Could you share this please? It's important to me to return it. Many thanks to all. Please share this."
More than 80,000 people shared the post on Facebook and one person who saw it was Mr Aliaga's niece, who lives in the Benidorm area. She then put her relatives in contact with Ms Nisos who was able to return the ring.
