McFadden, 36, and Katona separated in 2004, but they were embroiled in a custody battle for their two children – Molly, now 15, and 13-year-old Lilly – until 2008.
While the former couple had a far from amicable split, they are now understood to be back on friendly terms, and speaking on ITV's This Morning on Friday (2 September), the former Westlife singer praised his former partner and his daughters.
He told the hosts: "Kerry has done a fantastic job raising them. She's been amazing.
"They are such great kids. They have obviously had it hard with us breaking up when they were very, very young and everything they've gone through but they are just amazing kids. It's ridiculous how they turned out."
However, when asked if he was worried about his children growing up too quickly, he added: "We live in a world these days with the internet and social media and stuff like that.
"I think kids grow up a lot faster. I think in the old days when we were kids we were kind of shadowed and sheltered away from the problems parents had, but with the modern world you just can't."
McFadden and Katona married in January 2002. They separated in September 2004, with their divorce being finalised two years later.
