Earlier this week, the actress and her former husband Johnny Depp released a statement to say that they had come to an agreement. At the time, it was said that Heard, 30, would donate proceeds from the settlement to an undisclosed charity. It has now been revealed that she has donated the £5.3m ($7m) to two charities. They are the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to prevent violence against women, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
In a statement, the actress said: "Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.
"As reported in the media, the amount received in the divorce was $7m and $7m is being donated. This is over and above any funds that I have given away in the past and will continue to give away in the future."
She added: "I know these organisations will put the funds to good use and look forward to continuing to support them in the future. Hopefully, this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most."
Heard had earlier accused 53-year-old Depp of striking her and throwing a mobile phone during a fight. He denied the allegations, with his lawyer claiming that Heard had made the allegations in order to obtain a better settlement.
The couple married in February 2015; they announced their separation in May.
