The survey, commissioned by sunshine.co.uk, selected over 2,000 people in the UK, aged 25 and over, to try and find out the answer. Participants had all been on holiday with their partner for the first time in the last three years.
They were first asked, 'How long did you wait before going on holiday abroad with your current partner after you first formed the relationship?'
The average length of time was found to be two months. However, of those who waited six months or less before going on holiday with partner, 42% said that the trip had already been booked by either them or their other half before they met and the other person was later added to the booking.
When it comes to where couple's take their first holiday abroad, Tenerife topped the list with 17% of the vote. This was followed by Turkey (14%) and Ibiza (11%). Egypt (8%), Gran Canaria (5%) and Cyprus (2%) also made the top 10.
Elsewhere, the average spend on booking the first holiday was said to be £480 per person, with the average length of holiday lasting 10 nights.
Sue Anderson, from sunshine.co.uk, said: "We have to say, we were somewhat surprised to see that couples wait just two months on average for that initial getaway.
"It seems a bit soon, because you may not really know the person fully in that time and it's probably not wise to take a trip with someone you don't feel all that comfortable around yet.
"As for the most popular destination for first time couple's holidays, it seems to be the cheap and cheerful places closer to home that are favourable."
