According to car hire company Holiday Autos, some 40% of couples will argue at least once a day while on holiday – with a quarter having a disagreement within the first day of their trip.
A total of 2,000 adults took part in the poll. Of those, 24% said that their partner failing to help with the luggage was a common trigger for a holiday row, while 15% admitted that just trying to find their way out of the airport was another cause for argument. Tackling the queues at passport control (12%) and navigating foreign roads (10%) were also said to be the source of the first holiday argument.
When it comes to the triggers for holiday arguments, some 18% of respondents said it was because they spend too much time together, while 17% said it was because of spending too much money. The same percentage also admitted that they argue with their partner on holiday when they are drunk. Deciding on where to eat and drink (16%) as well as the pressure to organise everything (14%) were also said to be triggers.
Interestingly, driving holidays topped the list as the type of holiday to cause the most fights (19%), closely followed by a beach holiday (18%) and a family holiday (14%).
When it comes to driving, bad navigating skills top the list with 32% of participants saying this caused a row. A further 15% blamed 'backseat driving', while 9% said children arguing in the back of the vehicle was to blame.
Corinne Sweet, relationship expert, said: "Squabbles about small and insignificant details can often snowball out of proportion. It's important to learn to stop an argument before it explodes. Take a deep breath and time out to think."
