Newly released figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that fewer than half of adults in England and Wales are now married.
The statistics show that last year, just 48.1% of people over the age of 16 are now married and living as a couple. While many of those who once would have married, now live together as cohabitees. Cohabitation is said to have risen to 9.5% last year. This is an increase from 6.8% in 2002.
Another factor which is thought to have contributed to those who do not live in a partnership is the 'boomerang generation' – i.e. young people who live with their parents as they are unable to afford their own home. 25% of people were found to have never married or lived with anybody.
Pamela Cobb of the ONS is quoted as saying: "Just over half the population aged 16 and over were married in 2015. This figure has steadily declined since 2002, which could be associated with a rise in cohabiting amongst those who have never married."
