Greg Rutherford Unveils Zika Fears

Greg Rutherford's partner, Susie Verrill, has revealed the Olympian has chosen to have his sperm frozen ahead of the Rio Olympics over fears of the Zika virus.

In an article, which has been published in Standard Issue Magazine, Verrill admitted: "The Zika news has caused no end of concern. We've made the decision to have Greg's sperm frozen. It's just another thing we don't want to chance."

She added that she would not be flying out to Brazil to support her partner.

"We're not ones to worry unnecessarily, but after more than 100 medical experts stressed the Games should be moved to prevent the disease from spreading, this was a huge factor in us choosing to stay put," she admitted.

"We'd love to have more children and, with research in its infancy, I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation which could have been prevented."

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus, which has been linked to serious birth defects. It has been declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO), and last week it said it would look at the risks of staging the sporting event in the city of Rio after rejecting calls from more than 100 leading scientists to move or postpone the Games over fears that the virus could spread even further.

Verrill and Rutherford have one child together; a son named Milo.
