Johnny would like to return to the UK but Courteney is worried what effect it would have on her 10-year-old daughter Coco.
A source told Grazia Magazine: "One of the main reasons that they split originally was because they couldn't agree on where to settle.
"Johnny desperately wants to move back to London where he has a studio, but Courteney doesn't want to uproot Coco, and says it would be too hard with the custody agreement she has with David."
The source added: "They've spoken about doing long distance but everyone has warned them it's a bad idea, including her best friend Jennifer Aniston, who almost split from Justin [Theroux] when he was living in New York and she was in LA.
"They're trying to work out a compromise because they both want to make it work."
