New Framework For NI Midwives Published

A new framework for nurses, midwives, health visitors and allied health professionals has been published by the Department of Health in Northern Ireland.

The framework has been developed to support the national programme and maximise the impact of improving health outcomes, and reducing inequalities.

Welcoming the announcement, Breedagh Hughes, Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Director for Northern Ireland, said: "Midwives are ideally placed to have a significant effect on the health of the population. They are often a women's first real encounter with the health service and can play a vital role in improving the health of women and their babies.

"Without ensuring that there are enough new midwives coming through to replace those who are planning to retire, their impact will be lessened. There is a need to ensure that we plan now to avoid a midwife shortage in the future.

"This framework must be backed up with investment and resources. For example, services for pregnant women with mental health problems are poor in Northern Ireland and need to be improved.

"There is not one mother and baby unit in the country where pregnant or new mothers with mental health problems can be cared for with their babies. This is a serious failing and needs to be addressed.

"We have a great document with great ambitions, but this is nothing without the assembly's commitment and actions to ensure the health workers we need to deliver it can do their job effectively."

The framework can be viewed here.
