Jamelia Discusses Abusive Relationship

Jamelia has opened up about a former abusive relationship, revealing that a similar storyline in EastEnders helped give her the courage she needed to leave her partner.

The singer, who is now a panellist on ITV's Loose Women, was discussing new guidelines being introduced that will see those found guilty of domestic violence receive counselling for their issues.

The 35-year-old told her fellow panellists: "I have been in a domestically abusive relationship in the past and effects are lifelong – over 15 years and I still to this day suffer from that relationship. I support anything that goes to break that cycle."

She then referenced a storyline in EastEnders back in 2002 which involved the character Little Mo and her abusive husband Trevor.

"That was what gave me the strength to get out of that relationship," she admitted. "I had a small baby and I thought, 'That can't be me'.

"You lose your self-esteem. It's like you can't function, and it needs to be on the map, it needs to be discussed, it needs to be out there. People need to be able to speak out and get support."

Jamelia, who is a mum of two, shares 12-year-old daughter Teja with her former partner.
