The research, which was commissioned by Direct Line, revealed that 43% of parents didn't trust their offspring when left alone in the house – with mothers said to be less trusting than fathers. When asked if they trusted their child to be home alone, 46% of mums said no, compared to just 36% of dads. In fact, 20% of parents went so far as to admit they dread when their kids have scheduled time off school – such as half-term break or the summer holidays – because it gives their children more time to damage items in the home.
Interestingly, 66% of parents said they did not completely trust their child to leave the house in the same condition they left it in, while 62% of parents (aged between 35 and 64) said their teenagers have made it even harder for them to leave them in the house unattended.
Looking at the different regions within the UK, Wales and the East were found to worry the most. Some 52% of parents feel they are unable to leave the house because there is a chance they will come home to something that has been damaged or broken. 10% of parents in Wales admitted they come home at least once a week to find something broken by their offspring.
This compared to the North East (77%) and the South West (71%) who said they never come home to a damaged house.
Commenting on the poll, Katie Lomas, head of Direct Line Insurance, said: "When it comes to leaving teenagers alone in the house, it only takes the slightest thing to go wrong to spark all kinds of apprehension. Whether you are out the house for five minutes or five hours, accidents happen, things get broken."
