While Edwards has not corrected any of these reports, Malik has insisted that he did not end the couple's engagement via a text message.
Explaining why he chose to write the song about his ex, the 23-year-old previously said: "I just felt like I needed to put myself out there on that just because it was a form of therapy for me and it did help get me through some s**t."
Malik and Edwards, 22, first met in 2011 on the set of The X Factor – the former One Direction member was appearing on the show with the band, while Edwards was a contestant on the series. The couple confirmed their relationship the following year, and in August 2013, they announced their engagement. Their romance ended in August 2015.
