Survey Reveals Top Valentine's Destinations

The most romantic destinations couples visited this Valentine's Day have been revealed.

The poll, commissioned by sunshine.co.uk, asked over 2,300 people, who were in a relationship, where they had planned to visit on 14 February.

Participants were first asked if they would be staying in the UK or going abroad for the most romantic day of the year, with 55% saying they would be going abroad.

Of those going away, Iceland topped the most popular destination list with 12% of the vote. This was followed by Italy (9%), Germany (8%) and the Netherlands (8%), with Spain (7%) rounding off the top five. The USA, Belgium, Mexico, Norway and Morocco completed the top 10.

For the 45% who said they would be remaining in the UK, the top destination for Valentine's was found to be London (14%). Yorkshire was a close second (13%), with the South West (8%) also featuring high on the list.

When it comes to that romantic break, the survey found 66% of those trips this year were booked as a surprise by one person in the relationship. The average spend for such a trip, including spending money, was £428, while the average length a couple goes away on a break is three nights.

Sue Anderson, sunshine.co.uk, said: "Italy has long been the most popular destination for Valentine's breaks, with locations like Venice and Rome known for their romantic atmosphere, but Iceland has taken the lead this year.

"The phenomenon of the Northern Lights is fast becoming one that everyone wants to witness for themselves and Iceland is the perfect place to try and catch a glimpse from. People are clearly becoming a bit more adventurous in their travel plans."
