His comments come just days after he revealed in an interview that he was dating an "incredibly famous" woman. Speculation as to who the mystery woman could be soon followed, but the actor has now been forced to admit that he was joking with the journalist who was interviewing him.
The 63-year-old was asked about Valentine's Day during the interview, to which he replied: "I'd embarrass her if I said her name. She's incredibly famous. I'll have to do my best for her. It's amazing how far a simple bunch of freshly picked flowers will go in a lady's life, I find.
"I'll send out a few bunches of flowers to various people and I usually just say 'from an Irish admirer'."
However, a spokesperson for Neeson has now said that the actor was "joking".
They said: "He was joking with the writer during an interview he was doing with the Irish Independent."
Neeson was previously married to actress Natasha Richardson. She died in 2009 following a skiing accident. The couple first met in 1993 and married the following year. They have two sons together; Daniel, 19, and 20-year-old Micheál, 20.
