The virus has been linked to thousands of babies being born with undeveloped brains. Recently, the virus was found to be spreading rapidly – and on a large scale – in the Americas.
Among the advice, officials in the UK have said if travel to affected areas is unavoidable, then women should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The Zika virus is transmitted to humans by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitos. Symptoms include light fever, rash, conjunctivitis and muscle pain.
The National Travel Health Network and Centre said women who are planning to become pregnant should also be aware of the risks, while any expectant mother who has recently travelled to a country where Zika is known to occur should tell their doctor or midwife.
It is understood three Britons have already contracted the virus after travelling to South and Central America.
