Andrew Coates, 41, a fireworks display organiser, and his assistant, 46-year-old Polly Connor, were preparing a fireworks display in Ecclerigg in August 2014 when the incident happened. It occurred at the wedding of John Simpson and Nicole Rothwell; it is understood the display was to take place in the grounds of Larch Cottage which overlooked Windermere.
At the time, the newlyweds were having photographs taken in the grounds of the cottage when catering staff heard "snapping and popping sounds".
Witnesses then heard explosions "from all directions" as the fireworks went off.
The bodies of Mr Coates and Mrs Connor were later found near the entrance of the fireworks storage room.
Post-mortem examinations confirmed they had died from the effects of an explosion and a fire.
A jury inquest has now begun to decide what caused the fireworks to go off, and why the pair were unable to get out of the store room. The hearing is set to last up to five days, the BBC has said.
