Anglican Leaders Sanction US Church Over Same-Sex Marriage Support

Anglican leaders have sanctioned a liberal US church branch from decision making for three years because of their support for same-sex marriage. Anglicans have been divided over the issue since 2003, when the US Episcopal Church ordained an openly gay bishop.

In a statement, leaders said the church's change in their Canon on marriage "represent a fundamental departure from the faith and teaching held by the majority of our Provinces on the doctrine of marriage."

They added that the "traditional doctrine of the church in view of the teaching of Scripture, upholds marriage as between a man and a woman in faithful, lifelong union." A majority of those gathered at the meeting this week reaffirmed this teaching, they said.

Leaders came to the decision of a three-year sanction in the hopes of preventing a formal schism, following a four-day meeting of 39 Anglican primates in Canterbury. The decision means that for the duration of the restrictions, the Church will be suspended from participating in the work of the Anglican communion, and will not take part in decision making on any issues pertaining to doctrine or polity.

It is understood the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has been asked to appoint a Task Group to rebuild trust in the Anglican Communion.

Anglicans are the third-largest grouping of Christians in the world, behind Roman Catholics and the Orthodox.
