The research, which was commissioned by dating site eHarmony, in conjunction with The Future Foundation, found that the second Wednesday in December, or 'Anti-Valentine's Day', is the worst day of the year when it comes to romance.
It is thought an interest in dating plummets by 30% on this day, compared to average rates.
Looking at the reasons as to why this is the case, the survey discovered that the cold weather tops the list with 28% of the vote, while 11% said it's because they are too busy Christmas shopping. One in four also confessed they go on fewer dates in December.
Elsewhere, of the 10 least romantic days of the year, six appear in December alone.
Collated as part of the 'Lovedex' – which measures daily interest in dating on a scale between zero and 100 – eHarmony and The Future Foundation used three factors to score any given day when it comes to romance. The indicators were daily Google search data for dating terms such as 'dating venues,' the social media mentions of these phrases, and traffic to eHarmony. The average day scored 28. However, the second Wednesday in December only has an average Lovedex score of 21.2.
At the other end of the scale, is the most romantic day of the year – Valentine's Day. It had an average Lovedex score of 72.7.
Commenting on the findings, Jemima Wade, eHarmony, said: "Although for many the festive season is dedicated to giving, it's important not to forget your own needs this December; whether that means taking some time for yourself or looking for someone to share those cold evenings with."
