The man, who has been named as Australian Matthew Hannibal, is said to have been caught out after MasterCard shared an image of him on Facebook where he was celebrating at one of the games earlier in the tournament. Taking to the social media page himself, he wrote: "Dear MasterCard, I would like to formally thank you for displaying my photo at the Rugby world cup 2015.
"Unfortunately I told my girlfriend at the time that I was travelling to London for 'business' and needless to say I am now single. To be fair it was never going work out, she's 6'9' and I'm afraid of heights.
"However, this scene of events has been quite dramatic for me and my mates who travelled with me from Sydney to London. I was hoping for a small amount of compensation for damages caused by posting this ugly mug on your website."
He added: "Perhaps tickets for me and a few friends to a sponsored gig in Sydney... thoughts MasterCard?
"Flight to London – $2,200, Aus V England tix – $450, losing girlfriend to see Australia beat England – worth it."
On Friday, MasterCard responded to his claims, saying: "Hey Matthew, We're sorry our actions caused such a dramatic turn of events!
"At MasterCard we believe you shouldn't give up on love. To help patch things up with your ex, we'd be happy to arrange a romantic, candle-lit, three course dinner for the two of you, on us.
"We'll ensure the venue has high ceilings.
"Please get in touch via private message and we'll start making arrangements!
"All the best, MasterCard Australia."
It is not known if Mr Hannibal has accepted their goodwill gesture.
