The speculation goes back to 2005, when Jay Z scouted Rihanna and managed the launch of her first single, Pon De Replay, but while many have said PRs spread the rumours to boost the singer's profile, others claim Beyoncé didn't know how to deal with the situation.
Now, in an unauthorised biography by J Randy Taraborrelli, Becoming Beyoncé: The Untold Story, he looks at the singer's marriage to Jay Z, and claims that the couple separated for a year following claims that Jay Z had been unfaithful.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Thursday about the affair claims, Taraborrelli is quoted as saying: "Beyoncé didn't know what to make of this, and it actually ended up breaking them up for a time. They spent maybe a year apart from each other because Beyoncé just wasn't sure of what to make of the situation with Rihanna."
However, he added: "It's safe to say that Rihanna and Beyoncé are friends."
According to Taraborrelli's claims, the split would have been around 2005; at that time, Jay Z was 35, Beyoncé was 24, and Rihanna was 17.
The writer also addressed the now famous 'elevator' incident in May 2014, when Beyoncé's sister Solange was caught on a surveillance camera hitting Jay Z in the elevator of New York's Standard Hotel after the Met Gala. There was no audio with the video, which was leaked online, but many have since speculated on what caused the 29-year-old to lash out – while her sister stood by and didn't intervene.
Taraborrelli claims he has now spoken to a number of people who are close to Beyoncé, and says that eyewitnesses told him that Beyoncé told her husband he could not go to Rihanna's after party at the Met Gala.
"I think it's safe to say the only people who know for sure what happened are Bey, Jay, Solange and the bodyguard who were in the elevator," he said.
Beyoncé, 34, and 45-year-old Jay Z are now married with a three-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy. They have not commented on Taraborrelli's claims.
