RCM Welcomes Revalidation Decision

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM), has welcomed a decision by the NMC regarding the introduction of revalidation for midwives and nurses in the UK.

Revalidation will be introduced in all four UK regions from April 2016.

The decision means all 685,000 midwives and nurses on the NMC register will go through the process as their registration becomes due for renewal over the next three years.

Louise Silverton, Director for Midwifery, RCM, said: "Midwives will need to demonstrate that they have met the current NMC requirements regarding their continuing professional development and practice hours, as well as receiving feedback relevant to their practice, demonstrating how their practice is in line with the code.

"This is the first stage in revalidation and the NMC will be evaluating it with a view to enhancements when all midwives have gone through the process. Revalidation is the responsibility of every midwife and we will be looking for employers to facilitate them accessing the professional conversation and confirmation.

"We need midwives to see revalidation as an extension of what they already do. The RCM will continue to educate and inform its members by building on its existing extensive e-learning offering, as well as the well evaluated electronic portfolio."
