The pair have been married for 58 years and have one son together.
Speaking to the Sunday Times Magazine, he said: "I've realised she's had depression since she was young. She's always had a touch of it.
"I don't think she really enjoyed getting out and about, and I think she was happy being in the house."
Despite his frequent cheating during their marriage, Sir Tom said Linda "chinned" him over his affair with former Miss World Majorie Wallace in 1976.
He said: "I stood there and took it. She chinned me. When she let fly, Dai [his minder at the time] just left. I said, 'Go ahead'. She punched and shouted."
However, he still claims Linda is the "love of his life".
He said: "Linda is the love of my life, and she still is, even though she doesn't look like she did. I don't look like I did either, but I try my best. She's lost her spark."
Sir Tom is to release his autobiography this week.
