Number Of Children Receiving MMR Vaccine Falls

The number of children, aged two, in England receiving the MMR vaccine has fallen.

According to figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre, 92.3% of children had the vaccination in 2014-15. This compares to 92.7% the previous year.

The jab protects children from measles, mumps and rubella.

The head of immunisation at Public Health England, Dr Mary Ramsay, said the figures are "pleasing", but added: "We urge all parents to check that their children are up-to-date with their vaccinations and to contact their GP as soon as possible if they are unsure so that no child misses out."

The statistics also reveal that some areas of England had less than 80% of children immunised against the diseases, despite the target rate being set at 95%. For example, in some boroughs of London, as well as the south east, the figure of children immunised was less than 80%. In parts of the West Midlands and the north of England, more than 95% of children received the vaccine.
